My mom seems to dislike the idea of welfare. l could definitely use the help; I am a college student. l would probably be eligible for SS/disability because of a mental disability l have. What are the disadvantages of being on SS? Is it harder to get a job/apartment?

May affect future employment with a documented medical problem.
I'd say take some time off from school and work for awhile to help with the current bills. Return to school later

l am pretty sure there should not be any problems with getting a job or an apartment because of the many laws like the Americans With Disabilities Act that r in place to protect certain individuals. There is a very strong negative part of taking on welfare that many do not talk about. Sometimes when someone takes on welfare it hinders them in reaching their potential. Some of the laws r set up that u get less money from the government the more u make ( l do not know if this will be accurate in ur case). Because of this people r afraid of striving for greater things because it will eliminate their “free money” & they tend to take on the victim mentality. l can understand where ur mother is coming from. If l were in ur shoes l would not go on welfare unless l needed it. That is if l am unable to work because of a disability. The reason l view it this way is because the money l would receive would be taken from someone else who has worked hard to earn it.
