Now is the best time for that. Call your credit card company and let them know you are thinking about closing the account because you have found other cards with lower interest rates and low balance transfer rates. Tell them you love their card and want to keep using it but you cannot handle the interest rate. Banks right now NEED business. l am sure they will work with you. GOOD LUCK!

The first step is to research other credit cards & balance transfer rates. Most cards will give u a low rate for at least 6 months if u open a new card with them & transfer the balance from other cards. Look around to find out what options r out there. Make sure to ask questions like what the rate is, how long is the introductory rate valid, what is the rate after the introductory period expires, & if there r annual fees or balance transfer fees.

Once u know what is out there, call ur card company. Tell them plain & simple that u have a better option if u transfer ur balance to a different card. Tell them the rate u could get on another card, & tell them that if they do not beat the offer u will transfer ur balance. Most of the time they will lower ur interest rate on the spot. If they don't, then u should go through with a balance transfer to another card.

After u do this, continue to keep an eye on ur interest rate. If it goes up (like if the introductory rate expires) then repeat the process. Or, if u find a better deal with another card, call them again & tell them they have to do even better if they want u to keep ur account open.

Edit: response to Kim: do not tell them u love their card! If u do, they will be less willing to negotiate because there is less threat of them loosing ur business. Tell them flat out that if they can not give u the best rate in town that u will close the card, & be ready to follow through with the threat.

Pay it off. You get zero interest that way.

Pay more than the minimum and keep doing so.

You cannot pay anyone else late either. They tell each other and hike the interest rate. It is not fair but neither are they.

l am about to pay mine off shortly. l never want another. Not on their terms and if they can not meet mine, who needs it? That is why we are in the economic folly that has been created.

Call the 800 number on the back of the card and ask for a lower rate. If they deny you a lower rate call around and ask for a credit card with no annual fees, free balance transfers and a low *fixed* rate.
